Interior Design Michigan: Ceiling Designs

The ceiling makes up nearly 20 percent of all interior space; yet, it is most often ignored by residential interior decorators. Ceilings in public places are typically given more attention because they occupy such a large space. Ceiling design can be an integral part of any room, from the elegant dining area to the spacious foyer.

One of the most common ceilings treatments seen in homes is the textured, “popcorn” ceiling, which has been a popular choice for over 40 years. The use of texture helps to hide imperfections in the drywall or plaster finish while creating a decorative look. Acoustical ceiling tiles are commonly used in commercial buildings. Both of these designs offer some value; however, neither adds much ambiance to a room.

There are many creative ceiling designs ranging from easy paint applications to elaborate architectural structure. Weather you are remodeling an existing home or building a new one, consider the many options for ceiling design to make a great impression on anyone who enters.

Flat is out – Vaulted, Arched or Dome Ceilings add a Whole New Look

The vaulted, arched or dome ceilings require detailed planning during the construction of the building, but the elegance of this look is well worth the work. These ceilings create a quiet, peaceful mood for a dining room.

Wood Beam Ceilings: Wood adds comfort and warmth to casual living spaces, family rooms and libraries.

Coffered Ceilings: Ceilings made up of multiple, decorative recessed panels are a unique look.

Tin Ceilings: Tin ceilings are made up of embossed, tin-plated steel, for suspended ceilings, in patterns ranging from Art Deco to Victorian styles.

Skylights: Though not real attractive, in the right room, skylights can add an interesting effect. Skylights should be strategically placed to complement the floor plan.

Decorative Trim and Crown Molding

Trim and molding are among the simplest of things you can do to make a dramatic difference on an existing ceiling. A good interior designer will choose the appropriate trim for use on high or low ceilings. Low ceilings can be treated to provide an interesting look while creating an illusion of height. High ceilings can be decorated with crown molding at the top of the wall. Then, you can add a small, decorative trim, about one foot below the crown molding and paint the space between a contrasting color or apply an adhesive wall paper border.

There are many simple paint applications that can make a huge difference or you can go all out and install one of many types of ceiling tiles, add wood beams, molding and decorative trim. With some creativity and planning, you can add personality to your ceiling to accentuate the rest of the room.
